Are computer games merely repetitive and violent fun, or rather a new artistic form with very specific expression possibilities? This question is addressed by film and game theorist Helena Bendová. Computer games are analyzed from the perspective of aesthetic, thematic, narrative, ideological and genre ones. At the same time, it analyzes the relationship of computer games to other artistic species, taking into account the social and cultural context in which negotiations on their artistic status take place.

The book is, to some extent, an overview of the state of play in the field of gaming studies, and is welcomed by film, media and cultural studies students as well as electronics professionals. The wider public, primarily the players themselves, who are interested in thinking about computer games from the position of social and humanities, may also be interested.

The book Umění počitačových her (“The Art of Computer Games”, NAMU) uses a customised, slightly condensed version of BC Novatica. A single glyph from BC Brief is used as illustration for the cover.
