First page of a French children’s book by Noëlle Norman, with illustrations by J. A. Dupuich, published in c. 1950 by Artima in the series Les albums du p’tit Quinquin. Apparently set in Congo during colonial rule, “The Bewitched Fetish exhibits the racist stereotypes that were common in European children’s books at that time (cf. Tintin in the Congo). See all pages on Agence Eureka’s Flickr stream.

The biline caps are from Lichte Elegant-Grotesk, which was also cast by Vanderborght in Brussels (Belgium) as Antique Élégante Éclairée, and by Dutreix in Limoges (France) as Les Universelles Éclairées. Matthieu Cortat’s Battling Titling is a revival based on the latter and expands the design to a bolder weight and obliques.
