“Southern Cross was Bruce’s Ornamented No. 1041, but originated about 1857 with Miller & Richards” [McGrew] as Two-Line Pica Ornamented No. 9 [Gray] No lowercase. Shown in the 1869 catalog of Bruce in 3 sizes; and in a c1885 MS&J specimen in four sizes. There are differences across the sizes; the smaller sizes have additional spurs.
