A.k.a. FHWA Series, a set of road sign typefaces developed in the late 1940s by Dr. Theodore Forbes, assisted by J.E. Penton and E.E. Radek, for the United States Federal Highway Administration. Highway Gothic is the official typeface for American highway signage [Frere-Jones Type].
Reinterpreted and greatly expanded by Tobias Frere-Jones in 1993 as Interstate. Pixymbols Highway Gothic is a direct digitization made by Roger Vershen. There is also an amateur freebie version named Highway Gothic by Tom Oetken, which was revised and extended by Andrew Bellamy as OC Highway (2022).
