A modular set of patterned blocks for building letters and other
ornamentation, consisting of a negative (“NE”) and a positive
(“PO”) series (the sample has the styles reversed). Made in 1931
[Göldner] or
1934 [Seemann]. Registered at the VdS in September 1934. Also

credits the design to Albert
Auspurg, but that’s uncertain. Maurice Göldner believes the
design is based on early border material by Butter. ATF released a
version in 1944 called Alpha-Blox.
Gujarati showed
it as Negative and Positive.
As part of his research about the Brüder Butter foundry, Göldner
did a digital reinterpretation (2009, unreleased).

Kaa (T-26, 2004) is a limited typeface based on the “PO” series. In 2015, Maria Sieradzki and Daniel Weiand created a wood type version at HBK Saar.
