Designed by Georg Schiller, then Imperial Engraver at the
Reichsdruckerei Berlin, for the official catalog of the German
exhibition at the Exposition
Universelle of 1900 in Paris. The matrices were subsequently
given to private foundries, to make the type available to the
public. [Bertheau] Shown in a Reichsdruckerei specimen from 1910 in
two weights, Neudeutsch and Neudeutsch
mager. Cast by C.F. Rühl as Neudeutsch and by
J. John & Söhne as Buchschrift “Ideal”. Rühl also had
the lighter weight (mager) and an open style (licht). [Reichardt]
Gebr. Mejo made a brass version for engraving. [Letter
Library] Not to be confused with Otto Hupp’s
Neudeutsch.
