ゴナ Gona is a Japanese typeface series
in a range of styles, developed at Shaken for phototypesetting.
It was the first of the Gothic typefaces
that now are called “Modern Style,” and had a huge influence on
later ones. The main designer is Yukihiro Nakamura
(中村征宏). The name is a
portmanteau of “Gothic” and “Nakamura”. He used
uniform stroke widths so that Japanese text combines better
with monolinear Latin typefaces.
Gona U (1975, used for sample), the
heaviest weight, was released in 1975. Nakamura also designed
Gona E (1979),
under the supervision of Kazuo
Hashimoto
(橋本和夫).
Gona
O (outline) was released in 1979, and Gona
OS (shadow) in
1981.
Gona L, M, D, DB, and B were
released in 1983.
Gona H, Gona
LB (lined outline version), and Gona
IN (inline
version)
followed in 1985.
The eight fonts released in 1983 and 1985 were
designed in-house. The director was Tsutomu Suzuki
(鈴木勉)
and the supervisors were Yukihiro Nakamura and Kazuo
