Ghost sign above a former butcher’s shop on Käthe-Niederkirchner-Straße in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. The three-dimensional letterforms are loosely modeled after Stentor, an upright brush script designed by Heinz Schumann and first cast by the East-German foundry VEB Typoart in 1964.

In an article in Berliner Kurier from 2003, master butcher Herbert Nischik proudly recalls his contribution to the festivities on the occasion of Berlin’s 750th anniversary in 1987: a giant saveloy measuring 25,70 m and weighing 300 kilograms, setting an all-time record. Nischik worked as butcher for 25 years. “In the third generation. My father had a shop in Jüterbog. In 1953 he was expropriated. It’s strange – I was later allowed to open a privately owned business.”
