During the Holocaust Jewish people from Düsseldorf and the area around were gathered in the city’s abattoir before they were deported to death camps. In the last few years the new buildings of the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf were built on that spot of the city. In the centre of the area is a memorial site which is called Alter Schlachthof (“Old Abattoir”). It also is home to the new library.

The memorial site Alter Schlachthof focuses on one of the survivors of this cruelty, Ilse Rübsteck-Falkenstein. The book shows how the world of a little girl turned upside down. The pages tell her story, from simple humiliation in school to the deportation and the return into an alienated home country.

The rights for the documents and photographs are held by different collections. It was not possible to obtain rights to publish this in a digital format. The pages in the DIN A4 format were simply bound with clips, so that teachers can easily copy them.
