Sylvain Mazas’ Arapix in use for the visuals that support On Earth by WASS.
WASS is a solo electronic project by Wassim Bou Balham that fuses the traditional Tarab genre with club music. When I heard the project, I was playing around with ideas for the visual representation of Arab space travel, a fantasy of course. Most of what we know about space and space travel comes from Western movies and images.
I started a process of filming my screen as it plays space movies and documentaries and images from NASA. I repeated the process until the images became barely recognizable.
The hero of the story is WASS, a cyborg from a far away galaxy who inhabits this digital intergalactic world. He is locked in an intergalactic saga with his idols from the past, the heroes of Tarab music. — Areej Mahmoud
