Clifton Chenier – Bogalusa Boogie album art
Shotgun in use for Clifton Chenier’s Bogalusa Boogie, released in 1976 by Arhoolie Records. The cover design is by Wayne Pope, with a casual photograph by Michael P. Smith. For the artist’s name, Pope toned down the perforated face a notch, and plugged the holes in L T N H.
As far as I know, Shotgun is the only typeface design by J. Looney. With its geometric shapes and the bullet hole counters, it looks like a tongue-in-cheek revenant of Art Deco faces like Indépendant (1930). Shotgun was issued by the Visual Graphics Corporation in 1972 in two styles, Loaded (solid) and Doublebarrel (outline), and came with plenty of alternate glyphs. Bitstream’s digitization has both styles, but lacks the alternates. In 2019, SoftMaker released a new (?) digital version that appears to include all the glyphs of the original.
