Superscript is a $5,000 scholarship awarded to people of color studying typeface design. Junior-year undergraduate and first-year graduate design students of color in US colleges and universities are encouraged to apply via the TDC website. The deadline is April 6, 2020.

The initiative is organized by the TDC and sponsored by Monotype. The announcement graphic was designed by TDC Officer Bobby C. Martin Jr. Unlike the sponsor logo may suggest, the font in use is not available from Monotype. It’s Halyard Micro Bold by Darden Studio. Intended for extra small sizes (as one can tell from the pronounced ink traps), it’s part of the Halyard series. Halyard was conceived by Joshua Darden, who is one of the still very few type designers of color, and arguably the best-known among them.

In a direct and purely typographic interpretation of the two key aspects, providing a “ladder” to people of color, the glyphs have been arranged on multiple ascending lines (see staircase glyphs) of alternating colors.

    1. See also the Malee Scholarship for a related initiative by Sharp Type that is directed at young women of color (from all over the world). The application deadline for the Malee Scholarship is 15 April 2020.
