Website for the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Thomas Thiemich’s Fakt is the department’s house typeface (or will be as long as I’m still working there, anyway), used on environmental signage and department literature. Background image credits are on the site.

    1. Nice to see Fakt put to work, Maurice. I think it hasn’t received much attention because it’s bypassed as “just another Neo-Grot” but it offers its own flavor of “plainness”. These web pages look good on my MacBook here (though readability is a tiny bit strained when the background lacks sufficient contrast). Clicking on the “Campus” nav is a rude awakening, but a reminder of how lovely the other pages are. How does it perform on Windows? (Or are all the UI students Macheads?)

    2. It’s okayish on Windows Vista, no idea about later versions (or on better monitors than the ones I have in my office supplied by my department). I tried to get some back-and-forth testing with the dev team on size and readability, since I work on Macs, but no joy. So I tried to work backwards from what I thought worked well enough on PCs given how they looked on my MacBook. I’m going to review some of those contrast questions over break here in a couple weeks.

I first looked at Fakt because of your and Paul Shaw’s Print article. I strongly recommend it to anyone, and precisely because it’s a lot more than just another neo-Grot.

    3. Bit late to the party with Fakt — but it’s really warming to me and I’m keen to see more of it in use in the wild.

On a 5K iMac it’s stunning, but not viewed it on lesser resolution screen which, no doubt the client will end up showing it to their peers on, so it could go either way.
