A Decade of Design on the Mind – psychoanalysis editorial
The brain signifies a study into the Psyche, the iceberg refers to Freud’s theory of the subconscious.
This project was briefed by Birmingham City University, in the heart of cultural England. It derived from the quest to learn about editorial design and typography.
The task was to create a written essay about a chosen topic paired with the subject of design. Psychoanalysis and design was tackled by me and brought together analytical illustration, warm colours and beautiful typographic choices. This 16 page editorial had to fit 1,500 words.
Each typographical, editorial and illustrative decision was made in reference to the topic of psychoanalysis. The font choices were made to ensure high quality type which complimented the geometric, warm illustration style and colour palette. I loved the inviting feel that Le Monde Journal gave the body copy and Bely Display really allowed for compelling, bespoke titles. They both stood out to me because of their sense of style in negative space.
DNA makes for a beautiful illustrative style which I thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with. The weaving shapes complimented the Bely letterforms.
Bely, when blown up large, is extremely elegant – it makes the number 1 look like an ornate skyscraper rising above the body copy.
