Dutch translation (by Parma van Loon) of Philip K. Dick’s science fiction novel Martian Time-Slip, originally published in 1964. This paperback edition by Meulenhoff came out in 1974 as #79 of the M=SF series, with cover art by Chris Foss.

The title typeface is Shatter, which probably was picked because mental illness is among the novel’s central themes. With its sliced-up and shifted letterforms, this typeface is sometimes chosen as a visual metaphor for schizophrenia, or disorder in general. Also, the Dutch verschuiving has the meaning of “shift”.

    1. In a comment to another recent contribution, Mark Simonson pointed out that many Letraset users used to repurpose a tilde as a hyphen. This was done here, too.

The sheet of rubdown type shown below doesn’t contain any proper hyphens or dashes. Letraset apparently relied on their users’ inventiveness to revert to (parts of) a rotated i or l if they really needed a straight horizontal of some kind. The sheet does include three wavy tildes, though, see the bottom right corner with the usual pile of diacritics.
