Contre Exemplaires by HEAR
Contre Exemplaires is a research publication made by students of the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR) in France, on the occasion of the 3rd Biennale Exemplaires in 2019.
Words from Julie Bassinot, one of the designer and author of the project:
“Contre-Exemplaires” speaks of failure in publishing. It brings together six critical articles on a selection of books published during the last 5 years. These failures are compared with other successful editions. We use the “mistake” to highlight a set of unspoken rules related to the practice of graphic design. The notion of exemplarity concerns only the graphic appearance of selected works, but also their process of elaboration, their singularity, as well as the coherence between form and content.
The layout of the book expresses its thematic with an experimental double side reading and mirrored page numbers. Titles are set in Till, body text in Lora, footnotes and captions in Raleway.
