We had the original version when I was a kid. As you can see from this photo, they totally missed the opportunity to incorporate the toy’s concept into the typography.
I think we have one like this somewhere in our house. If/when I find it, I’ll post it here to complete the Spirograph’s typographic evolution.
Thanks for sharing, Mark, that’s great! I came across the original box design while looking for images of the later editions, but was too lazy to find out if any type was used on it, in addition to the Helvetica. The squarish letters for the name are similar to Filmotype Gypsy, but that one’s not a match. It’s similar for the script: Filmotype Jade would come close with some stretching, but I don’t think it’s a cigar.
It wouldn’t surprise me if it was hand lettered.
And, FWIW, I don’t think we have one anymore.
