This the jacket for the hardback edition of Alex von Tunzelmann’s Fallen Idols, published in 2021 by Headline, an imprint of Hachette.

Like the statues that are the subject of the book, some of the letters in “Fallen Idols” are falling over or off.

All of the text on the jacket is set in Caslon in various sizes and colours, reversed out over the image at the bottom of the page. Caslons can be difficult to identify, but the w and S helped in this case to pin it down to LTC Caslon. The curiously weighty capital F and I confirmed it, as well as the uninspired Tw kern in “Twelve”.

The tester available at MyFonts suggests that ordinarily the Fa in the title would be poorly kerned, but the designer doing the wonky-letter treatment has also taken the opportunity to fix the kerning in that case.

Hachette blurbs this book as follows:

FALLEN IDOLS looks at twelve statues in modern history. It looks at why they were put up; the stories they were supposed to tell; why those stories were challenged; and how they came down.
