Maybe not the most exciting design, but a useful one for dating the elusive display typeface Zephyr (carried under this name by Conways and Lettergraphics), also known as Mirage (Formatt), Chariot (Monsen), and Zopper (Castcraft).

This appearance on the cover of the tour program by Sha Na Na from spring 1973 predates the earliest showing I was previously aware of, on a specimen poster issued by London-based typesetting service Conways in January 1974. I don’t know if Conways originated any typeface designs. Zephyr isn’t shown in any of the catalogs by local phototype companies Photoscript and Face Photosetting that I have seen.

The booklet was designed by Splinter Group, a studio active in the early 1970s, and published by Corbett, London. Small text is set in Eurostile. The logo of supporting act Esperanto is custom drawn.

    1. I guess that Pioneer might be the inspiration basis for this band’s logo.

    2. Agreed, there are more than a few similarities. Here’s the cover of their 1973 debut album, featuring more lettering in this style.
