Faire Local is Alexandre d’Hubert’s thesis about letters and signs specific to certain places and territories, made in 2021/2022 at ESAD Valence.

This thesis is an inquiry into what could be a “local graphic identity” based on signs and materials that could be found in a place. With a critical approach to ecology and production, Alexandre d’Hubert started his research by defining what “local” is and what it contains geographically and politically. It included an exploration of different elements of a territory and an analysis of projects based in particular places, mainly about vernacular signs and colour materials.

Based on this research, d’Hubert used two typefaces closely connected with a specific territory’s history.

Pasquale is a typeface designed by Gianluca Ciancaglini and Alessandro Latela, based on Pasquale De Stefano’s work called the last nummararo (sign painter) of Naples. His work is directly linked to local markets where his handwriting signals the prices of the goods displayed.

Chaumont is a typeface designed by Alexandre Bassi on the initiative of Fabrication Maison and supported by the ANRT. This typeface is based on the letters of Chantal Jacquet, a letter painter who left her mark in the town of Chaumont – from school outings to the poster festival, from car parks to football stadiums.

The text typeface is Redaction by MCKL. The insert uses Libre Franklin.
