The Pearl: A Magazine of Facetiae and Voluptuous Reading was a pornographic monthly magazine issued in London during the mid-Victorian period by William Lazenby. It was closed down by the British authorities for violating contemporary standards of obscenity.
In 1968, Brandon House published a new paperback edition of “the underground magazine of Victorian England”, “three volumes in one, complete an unabridged”, with an introduction by Jack Hirschman, Ph.D.. Shown here is the cover and slipcase.
The T in “The” is actually Vivaldi’s I. The I in “Introduction” is derived from the same glyph, with the decorative loop removed. The cover designer also trimmed the long base in the letter P and used the alternate form for d.
The sans-serif caps might be from Filmotype Ferdinand. This face was carried by VGC under the alias B-17. A 1969 specimen shows it with a different R, though. Or is it the lighter Florida?
