La constellation Gustave Doré is a journey through 19th-century illustrated publishing. The exhibition presents a variety of works by Gustave Doré and his contemporaries. It allows visitors to (re)discover his work illustrating fairy tales and legends, but also his lesser-known press cartoons, caricatures and documentary illustrations.

The identity of the exhibition is built on a dialogue between text and image, in the style of Champfleury’s romantic vignettes, illustrated stories or 19th-century press cartoons. Each section text is thus accompanied by details of the works inserted in the titles composed in PoW Covenant.

The historical reference that inspired the PoW Covenant type family include both the robust slab serifs of the time and the Didones that flooded nineteenth-century publishing. It allowed graphic designer Gaby Mahey from Atelier Bagarit to create great contrasts between titles and texts, while maintaining an overall consistency.

The exhibition is on display at Galerie Heitz, Musées de la ville de Strasbourg, France, from April 25 to July 15, 2024. It was curated by Franck Knoery. Simon Legros did the scenography.
