The blue oval plaque commemorating Prof. John Winthrop (1714–1779) is typeset in ITC Souvenir, a typeface that many designers love to hate. And entirely in bold all caps, no less! The plaque was probably placed on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Winthrop’s passing in 1979, when Souvenir’s popularity was still unbroken. The Cambridge Historical Commission was founded in 1963.
