A phototype face of unknown origin, but perhaps inspired by Europa Grotesque which it nearly matches (with alternates). Shown in Lettergraphics’ 1976 catalog as California Grotesk (in the index as California Grotesque), in 4 weights plus an Outline style. Shown in a c. 1976 Fürst catalog as California, in 5 weights plus Outline, with alternates for ‘fjrtyJ’.
Radius (in or before 1968) appears to be a precursor. California Grotesk is distinguished by a bearded ‘G’, a tailed ‘a’, a non-bracketed roof in ‘t’, and square instead of round dots.
Revived by URW++ as California Grotesk.
