A phototype face of unknown origin. Shown in Lettergraphics’ 1976 catalog as California Grotesk (in the index as California Grotesque), in 4 weights plus an Outline style. Nearly matches (with alternates) Europa Grotesque. Shown in a c. 1976 Fürst catalog as California, in 5 weights plus Outline, with alternates for ‘fjrtyJ’.
Radius (in or before 1968) appears to be a precursor. California Grotesk is distinguished by a bearded ‘G’, a tailed ‘a’, a non-bracketed roof in ‘t’, and square instead of round dots.
Revived by URW++ as California Grotesk.
