Probably originated as Rhodesian by Figgins in 1895. [Gray 1976] Issued by Farmer in 1899 as Manila [McGrew] and shown in their 1900 specimen. Advertised with references to the Battle of Manila from 1898. Also carried by John (Signir, 1898), Gans (Japonesa, before 1903), Augusta (Caratteri a Penello, before 1914), Urania (Serie Michelangelo), and Enschedé (Versierde Schrift Serie 8). [Reichardt 2011]
