An all-caps sans with concave stems and flare serifs for some
terminals. Issued by Caslon in three styles: Enchorial
(1883) with Shaded (1885) and Expanded
(1887) [Reichardt 2011]. According to R. Coupland
Harding, who references a circular by the Caslon foundry, “the
original design was the tint-face [= Shaded], but on proofs being
taken to test the general form of the letter, preliminary to
cutting the tint, its value as a solid face was recognized, and
matrices were struck from the half-finished punches. Then the tint
was engraved, and a second series, of course, registering with
absolute accuracy, was struck from the same punches. Afterward a
third series, in pure outline, was produced.” [Inland
Printer, vol. 15, no. 1, 1895]
No lowercase, but descending alternates including for ‘AFHMNPRT’
[c.1915
Caslon specimen]. Enchorial was also sold by
Fischer, Urania (as Serie
Fusinato), and Boston
Type Foundry (as London Series, before 1885
credited to John F. Cumming) [Reichardt/Hoefer].

It’s not clear if Enchorial Expanded originated at Caslon. Farmer had it as Spread – see the dedicated page.
Alan Jay Prescott made a digital interpretation based on Enchorial as Enclave Roman (2017, with Expanded, unreleased?) [Devroye].
