Originated at Filmotype. Flyer appears in their 1955 price list and in a c.1958 specimen as part of a large series of bold geometric sans serifs distinguished by vertically cut ‘G/S’ and round dots. This series includes Fargo (extra narrow); Flyer (narrow) with Elston (oblique), Veranda (outlined), Venice (outlined shaded) and Quest (stained); Free (medium wide) with Essex (oblique), Veteran (outlined) and Quota (rough contours); Ford (wide); and Flare (extra wide) with Ebony (oblique). Photo-Lettering had the related series Madison and Crenshaw Mascara. Credited to Edwin W. Shaar (Intertype) by Scangraphic/MyFonts, which appears to be a mix-up with Futura Extra Bold.

Letraset carried two weights (Bold and Bold Condensed) with VGC credits. [Letraset 1990 catalog] Face Photosetting carried 3 widths (as Flyer) plus Quest (as Fluff). Hollenstein had one weight. [1973 catalog] Typeshop showed 3 widths plus italic, outlined and shaded styles all under the Flyer name, and additionally had Flyer Serial, an extension to 7 weights plus outlined and shaded styles. Flanders is FontBank’s digital version of Flyer & Elston. OPTI Van Dyke Outline and OPTI Flare are Castcraft’s versions of Venice and Flare. Geometric No1 is URW++’s version in two widths. Digitizations under the name Flyer by Linotype/Adobe (2 widths; equivalent to Flyer and Fargo) and Scangraphic (2 versions with different spacing).
