Quentin is shown by Filmotype about 1958
[Filmotype c.
1958] but not yet in 1955. [Filmotype
1955]. Shown in an undated (1970s) catalog alongside
Roulette (solid) and Rajah (outlined and
shaded). Copied by VGC as M-1 [VGC
1972] and by Lettergraphics as 9-1 QU [Lettergraphics
1976]. Mecanorma’s version was named Gay Nineties
(1967, apparently named after
Filmotype’s specimen text). Adopted as Quentin by
Letraset before 1976. Shown in the Solotype catalog (1992) as
Vaudeville. Reproduced in Lettera 2 (5th
edition, 1976) as Roulette umstochen, credited to
Headliners.
Davison
Carousel (PLINC, before 1954) is a similar
interpretation of the same theme, in a wide range of styles and
with lowercase. The caps of Carousel F are virtually identical to
Quentin. Both are possibly based on a 19th-century
design, compare Vaudeville
(Tri-Arts Press, 1966) and
Carrousel (T.J. Lyons).

Commercial digital versions by URW and Elsner+Flake. There is also SilverDollar (Silver Graphics, 1992–94) and QuentinCaps (Dieter Steffmann, autotraced, 2000). FontMesa’s Saloon Girl appears to be based on a similar source and is available in 6 layerable styles. URW Wood Type is based on the fill.
