Designed by Ed Benguiat, apparently loosely modeled after Walhalla (Klinkhardt, ca. 1900), or after an untitled set of capitals shown in J.M. Bergling’s Art Alphabets and Lettering (1914). Discotheque is shown in the One Line catalog (1971) in 3 weights plus Outline and Contour variants, but not yet in the Alphabet Thesaurus, vol. 2 (1965). Used already in 1967.
Lettergraphics shows a virtually identical face in a single medium weight as Joe in a 1974 ad of “new goodies”. Also shown as Sheeba with a low-waisted ‘H’. [Solotype 1992]
