The oldest peer–reviewed design journal was first published in 1967 under the title The Journal of Typographic Research. The initial design was provided by Jack Stauffacher of the Greenwood Press, San Francisco. His iconic cover design with the four layers of handset Univers 55 was only slightly adapted for the second volume, and remained in use up until the sixteenth issue (Vol. IV, Number 4). A new design was introduced in 1971, when the name was changed to Visible Language.

Volume IV, Number 4 from October 1970 was the last issue to use Stauffacher’s initial cover design.
