The RWA is Bristol’s first art gallery, bringing world-class visual art from around the world to the South West. Located in a spectacular Grade II listed building in the heart of the city, the RWA is the UK’s only regional Royal Academy of Art.

Spy design studio conducted an extensive audit and during a period of consultation, it became very clear that the gallery’s brand had to feel much more relevant and engaging. It needed to reestablish confidence in the institution’s mission, both externally and internally, providing staff with the tools to effectively communicate to audiences and prospective funders.

The logotype was created to feel crafted with a modern twist, a fundamental part of a visual identity that is sensitive to the history of the gallery whilst bringing them right up to date. It is elegant yet robust, with the ability to adapt powerfully to the story being told whether through digital, print or 3D applications. A punchy colour palette and refined typography all help to provide a confident and beautiful brand which embodies the ambition of the gallery.

    1. Very slick. And only a few miles from Stourhead, the spiritual home of the modulated sans (even if nobody noticed until James Mosley…).

Their neighbours upriver Bath Spa University have their own custom stressed sans, too, except it goes a little further.
