I love these covers! I want to use them as an artist model for my work in school, but I cannot find the artist name anywhere!
I was wondering if you know the name of the artist or artists who are responsible for these magazine covers? Please tell me you do, it would help me so much!
The artist’s name is John Urban. In 1965, “the noted New York designer [was] an associate of Abril Lamarque, Machinery’s consulting art director”. Urban is also credited in issues from 1966, 1967, and 1968.
The artist in question is my father, John T. Urban, who died in 2017. He consulted for Industrial Press, among other things.
His obituary can be found here: www.john-urban-art.com
Thank you, Robert! I updated our record for your father. I noticed the obituary on that website doesn’t mention illustration or graphic design among John’s many interests. Was the work like the Machinery covers just a small part of his life?
Hello Stephan,
my father certainly expressed his artistic inclinations through his photography, but until I was recently contacted as a consequence of this forum post, I did not know that he had created these covers, so the answer is “apparently yes”.
