Europabrücke / Brennerautobahn postcard
When the Europabrücke (“Bridge of Europe”) opened for traffic in 1963, it took the title of Europe’s highest bridge, standing 190 metres (620 ft) high above the ground. Located in Tyrol, Austria, the bridge forms part of the main route across the Alps and connects southeastern Germany and northern Italy. The postcard shows the flags of four European countries; Germany, Denmark, Italy, and the UK. The reasoning behind this selection is not quite clear — maybe that’s where most tourists passing Tyrol come from?
Forum II (1952) is the second of two outlined and shaded all-caps typefaces designed by Georg Trump (1896–1985) as display companions to his Schadow-Antiqua (1938). You can bet it would have happened a lot earlier, were it not for World War II (1939–1945). Trump’s career was interrupted by war twice. Just after he had begun his studies under Cissarz and Schneidler at the Stuttgart Academy, WWI broke out, and Trump had to serve in the military for more than four years. Later, in 1939, after he had answered Paul Renner’s call to teach at Munich’s Meisterschule, he was drafted a second time, and was severely wounded during the last days of the war.
