Babel #1 is an international type symposium held right now (the 27th of November) at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main. Apart from Offenbach’s other delights (among them Äppelwoi and others), the symposium scores with speakers like Peter Biľak (typotheque) and Na Kim, who art-directed the renowned Korean Graphic magazine.

The simple, one-page website uses Radim Peško’s Larish Neue, a typeface rarely seen on today’s screens. The font is inspired by letterforms that the Viennese typographer Rudolf von Larisch drew about a century ago.

    1. Readers, I urge you to visit the site. Screenshots do not do it justice.

It doesn’t look right when I use Firefox (16.0.2). It uses Times then.

      On Safari no problems…

    3. You are right, something broke. And now the designer’s cheat is revealed: All zeros have been replaced with a lowercase ‘o’. Why? Because the zero in Larisch Neue has the dreaded stressless circular shape!

It doesn’t show in Manuel’s screenshots, but I get Times in FF, and Larisch Neue with lining figures in Safari. With both, the ‘o’ sticks out like a sore thumb.

    4. Strange — I just checked the website with Safari 6 (my home browser) and am confronted with lining figures just as you, Florian. Safari 5 (my office browser) displays the old style figures (as seen in the screenshots) where the »o-problem« obviously is no issue.

So here we are again: ye olde webfont problem.
