Cover for Talk Talk’s compilation album natural history: the very best of. The all lowercase typography features losely spaced Goudy Oldstyle, heavily stretched and slightly modified (for example, the arm on t was straightened). For the band name, the Regular weight is mixed up with a’s from the Italic style. Cover design by The Artful Dodgers (Keith Peacock, Neil Smith and Michael Faulkner). Cover painting: James Marsh.

The same design, and more artwork by James Marsh were used for “it’s my life”, that was re-released as a single along with the compilation. The 12″ featured a rooster; a dog was used for the 7″.

  1. The artwork for the 1990 compilation is a reference to the cover of It’s My Life (1984), the band’s second full album with artwork James Marsh, featuring the same dog and rooster. Typography (also with stretching and spacing) by Keith Breeden.

One of the singles released from the 1984 album was “I Don’t Believe in You”, also with artwork by Marsh featuring the butterfly with music note wings that returns on natural history.
