An Anatomy of Influence

Written by Thomas Daniell, with a foreword by Thomas Weaver and an afterword by Peter Cook, An Anatomy of Influence contains a wealth of texts and images that together elucidate the theory and practice of 12 leading Japanese architects. Rather than the usual array of exquisite yet autonomous buildings, this book focuses on the hitherto unexplored lives of their architects, and the febrile intellectual, social and political environment in which they worked.

Colours are used throughout the publication to differentiate voices and eras, original content from research; and give structure to more than three decades of Japanese architecture revisited in this book. Personal and archive photographs are used as footnotes to the interviews and four special sections present previously untranslated essays printed on a different paper using a lower lpi raster.

The book is set in Basel Grotesk Medium by Chi-Long Trieu and titles in Grow by Dinamo. The series of essays is set in Suisse Works (wildly condensed) on coated paper to suggest the feel of a magazine.
