Goudy Heavyface was Lanston Monotype’s response to
the success of Cooper
Black (BB&S, 1922). Designed by Cooper’s former
teacher Goudy in 1925 in roman (series 380) and italic (3801)
styles and expanded by Sol Hess with condensed (series 382, 1926)
and open (391, 1927) styles. [McGrew]
Lettergraphics’ film version had the roman as Goudy No.
1 and the italic as Goudy Heavy Italic, and
added a condensed italic as Goudy Long. All 3 styles
were available with numerous swash alternates. The italics
additionally came with “Fancy” caps, see Goudy
