Ender’s Game series book covers
The VGC typeface Angular is used on various editions of Orson Scott Card’s popular sci-fi novel Ender’s Game, including the 1986 paperback edition from original publisher Tor Books. Designed in 1973 by Georg Salden and released two years later, Angular has a peculiar space-age feel that was used for a variety of sci-fi and fantasy titles in the 1970s and ’80s, including Yurth Burden by Andre Norton (DAW) and The Star Wars Portfolio by Ralph McQuarrie.
Angular appearances faded in the late 1980s as digital production replaced phototype and there was no digital version of the typeface. That said, the 1999 design for Ender’s Shadow continued the series’ typographic identity, filling the cover with stretched Angular. Today, we have a comprehensive digital derivation of the typeface that comes directly from Salden, assisted by Ludwig Übele: Carree.

This 1986 Book Club Edition of Ender’s War from Nelson Doubleday includes the stories Ender’s Game and Speaker for the Dead. Jacket painting by Vincent Di Fate.
