Monogram Battlestar Galactica model kits

Alain Simon’s Karolys Italique (VGC, 1973) is the titling typeface used on the boxes and for the instructions of Monogram’s Battlestar Galactica model kits.

The science fiction television series Battlestar Galactica aired on the ABC network from September 17, 1978 to April 29, 1979. From Wikipedia:

The series follows a group of human survivors fleeing the destruction of their homeworlds aboard the titular spacecraft, searching for a new home while they are being pursued by the Cylons. […] Despite initially failing to find a wide audience, Battlestar Galactica developed a 1970s American cult and pop culture following. The show also spawned a media franchise which includes comics, theme park attractions, games, and the reimagined series.

The model kits were produced by Monogram under license from Universal City Studios.

There is no official digital version of Karolys, but Dan Zadorozny of Iconian made a series of fonts inspired by this use and others. First released in December 2014 and revised in April 2023, Galactic Storm comes in twenty styles including condensed, extended, outlined, shaded, decorated, upright, italic, left italic, and superitalic variants. Zadorozny describes it as follows:

Modelled after an old typeface that was used for various sci-fi themes in the 70’s and 80’s, “Galactic Storm” is a bit of a retro-sci-fi font. The original typeface was used for such things like the old logo for Disney’s Space Mountain attraction and packaging for Monogram model kits of spaceships. Galactic Storm has a true upper and lower case character set and has been tweaked to look a bit more up to date.
