The odd logo for VHS (Video Home System) is so very much a product of 1970s aesthetic, made from a very peculiar 1970s kind of typeface: Lee, by Leo Weisz for VGC. As Mark Simonson notes, “Leo is still around. He’s over 100 years old now, still paints, and even has a Facebook page.” [Edit: Leo Weisz passed away on September 21, 2014, aged 103] The first VCR to use VHS was the Victor HR-3300 (below) in 1976.
Lee was also used for the TV series Charlie’s Angels which debuted in 1976.
1976 was a good year for Leo Weisz.
