Designed by Sjoerd de Roos in 1939 as a monolinear variation of his Libra (1938), Simplex was ahead of its time. Having shaken off all connotations of medieval monks by eliminating the thick-and-thin of the broad-nibbed pen, it really only went off in the 1970s, when the skeletal uncial was rediscovered as an expression of exotic or otherworldy themes. The cover for Cooking Out of This World as published by Ballantine Books in 1973 is a prime example. The cookbook with recipes from various science fiction writers was edited by Anne McCaffrey (1926–2011). Her name is set in Burko (or maybe the virtually identical Blippo Bold). The cover art is by Jacques Wyrs.
