A collection of short stories and novellas written by Heinrich Böll (1917–1985) between 1947 and 1979. The cover was designed by Klaus Staeck (b. 1938), a German lawyer and publisher who is best known for his posters and other political graphic design work. Here he overlaid a photo of the idyllic Heidelberg Castle with an ominous silhouette. The typeface is Enge Block, or Block Extra Condensed, a 1920s addition to Berthold’s Block series that was among Staeck’s go-to fonts.
