In 2017, Alfred Weidinger became director of Leipzig’s Museum der bildenden Künste (MbdK, “Museum of visual arts”). Design collective ungestalt was commissioned as a contributor for staging exhibition typography. We helped the museum to change from pure collection presentation to exhibition spaces in which works are carefully contextualized with the help of words and images. The goal is to give visitors access to an overall art-historical experience, regardless of their prior knowledge.
In accordance with the new corporate design specifications of the museum branding – with Acumin and Magneta as the two brand typefaces – and taking into account the specific characteristics of the works, we successively implemented the typographic wall designs of the individual permanent exhibition rooms. The typography in the Klinger Hall is presented in a timeless, elegant manner in order to let the works speak for themselves and to emphasize their immortality. Where appropriate, however, the design also incorporates a chronological classification of the works presented.
Self Modernis one of the typefaces that was used in addition to the museum’s stalwart typeface selection. Here it is applied on a wall in its Regular and Regular Italic styles.
