This book offers a collaborative panorama of Belgian graphic design history from a multiplicity of perspectives, with essays on type design, colonisation and labour relations among other subjects. Contributors include historians, practicing designers, teachers and first-hand accounts. With hundreds of previously unpublished illustrations such as posters, signage, typography, book design, logos and archival photographs.

Jumbo Mumbo NF is a digital revival of Indépendant, probably the “most Belgian” typeface there is. Designed by Jos Dufour and Joan Collette, it was first cast in 1930 by Etablissements Plantin S.A., the Belgian branch of Lettergieterij Amsterdam. The name commemorates the centennial of Belgian independence from the Netherlands. Read more about it in Katrien Van Haute’s paper.
Or Lemmen is another typeface with Belgian roots. GUNMAD were inspired by a typeface designed by Belgian neo-impressionist painter Georges Lemmen in the early 20th century. The revival is based on specimens printed from the original metal type found in the letterpress workshop at La Cambre in Brussels.
