Gave it a quick look, and it actually appears to be Triplett, which can be confused for Friz cuz of how similar they are.
Of course it is! Thanks a lot, Quinn. I must have seen the stemmed U and the T with the angled roof, and then wanted it to be Friz Quadrata by all means, despite the many small deviations.
I have adjusted the credit and tagged what I believe to be the original version, Tribune by Headliners (before 1977, five weights plus Outline and Shadow styles). Triplett is the alias used by Castcraft for their copy (before 1978).
Later on, Compugraphic adopted Triplett. We do maintain a separate entry for Triplett, too, which is intended for the digital version. As far as I can tell, it was made in 1992, apparently in just two weights. It’s still being sold by Monotype, who claim on their website that the “design foundry is unknown”.
Treacyfaces, who acquired the Headliners assets, issued their own revision/revival under the name TF Trantino, in four weights, plus two italic weights.
The comparison below shows, from top to bottom:
1. Tribune Light (Headliners 1977)
2. Triplett CG Light, with tightened spacing
3. TF Trantino Medium
4. Tribune Black (Headliners 1977)
5. Triplett CG Black, with tightened spacing
6. TF Trantino Extrabold
