Helmut Matheis was born on this day in 1917, which probably makes him the oldest living typeface designer. He never stopped drawing and painting, and enjoys playing the keyboard. Happy birthday!
Slogan, designed in 1958 for Ludwig & Mayer, is his most successful release. The original foundry typeface had been adopted for phototypesetting and dry-transfer lettering and is digitally available in several versions. Despite its period style, the brush script is still pretty ubiquitous in advertising and on signs in the public space. Slogan even made it all the way to Hyderabad, India — and onto a neon sign on top!
