Evol/Love by Robin Waart

Evol/Love is a book by Dutch artist Robin Waart. It contains a collection of 160 stills gathered from movies as diverse as The Divorcee (1930) to No Strings Attached (2011), and an extensive index describing all of them. The book was designed by Vilmantas Žumbys and set using Suisse Int’l by Ian Party.

It was awarded at both the Best Dutch Book Design and the Best Lithuanian Book Design contests in 2021, and also shortlisted at the Best Book Design from all over the World in 2022.

Excerpt from the Best Dutch Book Design jury critique:

The ploy of placing all the film stills as negatives not only supports the trouvaille of the reversing significance of the title, but also shifts our perspective as we read or leaf through the book. Reinforced by the Japanese binding, this gives the impression of being inside the book looking out. A lovely – perhaps unintentional – effect that raises the book as a phenomenon to another dimension.
