This photo of the Barclay End at the Carrow Road ground has recently been featured in the “Random Old Analogue Photo Of The Day” series of photos at my “The Curves Man” Flickr.

For some time I had been curious about the very distinctive font used by my football club, Norwich City, for its merchandise and signage then, I think more or less by accident a few years ago, I discovered that it was Delphin.

  1. Thanks, Christopher. Do you happen to know when this sign was installed? A web search revealed that the use of Delphin for the Canaries goes back at least to 1989. I have added this as the approximate artwork date for the time being.

    Scan by Kiwicanary:
“Official match programme from the Barclays Division One match between Norwich City & Luton Town played at Carrow Road, Saturday 31st March 1990. Danish striker Henrik Mortensen on the cover. The Canaries won this encounter 2–0. Mark Bowen and Andy Townshend (pen).”

  2. Thanks Florian. According to my little bit of research just now the last seriously major re-development of Carrow Road occurred in 1990, so, although you say “at least” 1989 above, that puts those two points in time very close to each other and it makes sense that the club’s use of Delphin would, therefore, date back to around the turn of the 1980s to the 1990s. The photo I used is not of the present day and would have been taken in the 1990s, so that sign may well have been installed in the course of that 1990 re-development. I hope this information is of use.

  3. Very much so, yes! Let’s go with “circa 1990” for the sign, then.

  4. A very distinctive and unusual choice of font for a football club – have any other clubs used the Delphin font?
