The Goodies titles
The Goodies was a situation comedy produced by the BBC from 1970 to 1980 – then ITV (LWT) from 1981 to 1982 – and shown on BBC 2, with repeats on BBC 1. Starring and written by Bill Oddie, Graeme Garden, and Tim Brooke-Taylor’s pencil, it had a decidedly counter-cultural undercurrent to its 75 episodes which were made primarily for children. The choice of Mania for the television program reflects both its hippie appeal and kid demographic.
In addition, the typeface was used for each character/actor’s on-screen introduction in the opening titles, then with supplementary captions during the ending credits.
When the burgeoning franchise started releasing home-listening and literary tie-ins from 1974, it was again purposed for this function, a practice that has continued until the present day with DVD box-sets and original soundtrack collections.
